Over 90% of breast cancers can be detected when all three of the following methods are used together in a planned program:
AGE
BREAST SELF EXAM MAMMOGRAM • SCREENING DEVICES PHYSICAL EXAM
20-39 Once per month May be recommended on the basis of personal risk or need At least every three years
40+ Once per month Every year Every year

The earlier that breast cancer is detected, the better the outcome. Breast screening aids in early detection and can significantly increase the survival rate for women with breast cancer. Since most breast lumps are discovered by the woman herself, a monthly breast self-exam (BSE) is crucial for early detection. Perform a BSE monthly by following these 3 steps:

1. Lying Down • Place a pillow under right shoulder • Using light, medium and firm pressure, make small circular motions over breast area with the finger pads of your left hand. Follow up and down pattern • Repeat on left breast.

2.Before a Mirror • Check for any changes in your breasts - lumps, skin changes, dimpling, discharge • Raise arms above head and look again for same changes • Place hands on hips, flex chest muscles and look again for same changes.

3. In the Shower •
Raise right arm • With soapy hand and your fingers flat, check right breast • Use the method described in Step One • Repeat on left breast.
